Cross-Country Ski Trip to Glacier Point

Cross-Country Ski Trip to Glacier Point

A Cross-Country Ski Experience To Remember

A Cross-Country Ski Experience To Remember

Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and Yosemite High Country

The Glacier Point, which towers 3,200 feet above the valley floor, offers some of the most incredible views in all of Yosemite — including Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and the Yosemite High Country. In wintertime the only way to reach Glacier Point is via cross-country skiing or snowshoe.

The Ski Hut at Glacier Point

The Ski Hut is a rustic lodge located at Glacier Point and is only operational in the wintertime. Here, you'll find a charming dining area, comfortable sofas, a wonderful woodstove, and indoor bathrooms. There is also a large single-room bunk bed area that sleeps up to 20 skiers.

Travel to Glacier Point and Back in a Single Day

The distance from Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area to Glacier Point is approximately 10.5 miles. On average, experienced cross-country skiers can expect this one-way journey to take anywhere from 4 to 5 hours each way. If you are comfortable with a 21 mile roundtrip trek in a single day, then an out-and-back trip to Glacier Point may be just the thing for you.

NOTE: Skiing to Glacier Point and back is NOT something novice cross-country skiers should attempt. Be sure to review the cross-country skiing information provided for the Self-Guided Overnight Trip.

Very Important Information - Please Read

In frigid winter conditions, poor planning can lead to life-threatening situations. Plan ahead, be prepared for blizzard-like conditions, bring extra food and water, and pack more layers then you think you'll need. All guests must check-in at both the Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area Nordic Ski Center and the National Park Service A-frame before starting a trip to the Glacier Point Ski Hut. National Park Service will provide the necessary Wilderness Permit and Parking Permit.

Distances and Itinerary

It’s 10.5-miles from The Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area to Glacier Point on intermediate rolling terrain. You’ll be carrying a backpack with all of your gear at over 7,000 feet in elevation where there’s less oxygen. In stormy conditions, you may have to break trail. Intermediate skiers in good condition should allow 4 to 5 hours of skiing each way in good conditions. In poor weather, it’s possible that the one-way trip could take as long as 10 hours. Days are short, and nights are cold — and you should be prepared to ski in the dark and spend the night outdoors in case of an emergency. Skiing to Glacier Point is not something that novice cross-country skiers should attempt.

Schedule your trip, and keep track of your progress while following these essential tips:

  • Always keep track of your time and be aware of how much energy you have, so you make good decisions and stay safe.
  • Establish cut-off points and commit that if you're not at a specific point by certain time, you'll turn around so you can make it to shelter before night falls.
  • Dinner is served nightly from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. After 8:00 pm there will be some food available, but you'll have missed that night’s prepared meal.

The chart below will give you a sense of ski times from point to point. Always be aware of how much energy you have in reserve, as your pace will slow when you become more tired.

Emergencies and Rescues

Rescues and emergency assistance are under the jurisdiction of The National Park Service. If there’s an emergency, dial 911. The most common emergencies are unprepared or under prepared skiers. The smartest thing you can do is to always be prepared to spend the night outdoors.

The hut keeper will be waiting for you if you have a reservation for lodging or a meal, so if you decide to turn around, make sure you let us know. We don't want to start an unnecessary search and rescue mission. Cell phone service is poor in the mountains, and there’s no cell coverage at the Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area. As you get closer to Glacier Point, it’s more likely that you’ll have cell phone service. Therefore, you should contact us before you leave The Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area, using the phones in the main building. Dial 9 first and then one of the local numbers below. If you call after hours, please leave a message.
