Pallet Wrapz: A Greener Alternative to Plastic Wrap

Before Pallet Wrapz adoption, vendors shipped goods to Yosemite Hospitality wrapped in plastic film. After counting and marking all the boxes, the pallet was rewrapped and stored in an onsite warehouse, contributing to plastic waste generation. However, recognizing the need for change, Aramark Destinations made a pivotal switch to Pallet Wrapz. Pallet Wrapz is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic film because it can be reused thousands of times. This more efficient wrapping solution helps streamline operations and significantly reduces plastic waste by eliminating the second plastic wrapping of the pallet. By adopting Pallet Wrapz, Aramark Destinations saves approximately 800,000 square feet of plastic wrap waste annually, demonstrating the commitment to sustainable practices.

Trex: Turning Plastic Film Recycling into Sustainable Products

Recycling plastic film is a challenging endeavor due to its non-recyclable nature. However, Yosemite Hospitality has found a solution through a fruitful partnership with Trex, a company that specializes in recycling plastic film. Trex repurposes the collected plastic film into eco-friendly products like decking boards and picnic tables. The success of this collaboration lies in a unique partnership with the Mariposa County landfill. The landfill not only stores the plastic film collected from Aramark Destinations but also extends the service to other Mariposa County businesses, expanding the positive impact on plastic waste reduction.

A reservation will be required to drive into or through Yosemite National Park on some days from April 13 through October 27, 2024, for those driving into the park between 5 am and 4 pm as follows:

Driving through the park will also require a reservation if entering between 5 am and 4 pm. If you are planning to visit after peak hours, please do not arrive before 4 pm; vehicles blocking roads will be cited.

The temporary reservation system will help manage congestion and provide a quality visitor experience.

S’mores Kits – A Shift Towards Compostable Packaging

Even the iconic s’mores kits, cherished by visitors around the campfire, have undergone a green transformation at Yosemite. Collaborating with their suppliers, Aramark Destinations sought to reduce plastic waste by making the clamshell packaging compostable. With more than 4,000 s’mores kits sold annually, this simple yet impactful change significantly contributes to Aramark Destinations’ sustainability goals.

Napa Nuts Partnership – Eliminating Plastic Waste

In another move towards a more sustainable future, Aramark Destinations partnered with Napa Nuts, a local California company, to address plastic usage at The Ahwahnee Sweet Shop. Previously using plastic bags for some candy items, the shop now embraces compostable rice paper bags which significantly reduces plastic waste. This environmentally friendly choice saves approximately 900 plastic bags from entering landfills every year. The success of this initiative has been so impactful that the program is set to expand beyond the Sweet Shop, making a broader contribution to Yosemite’s overall environmental conservation efforts.

How to Have a Perfect Day at Badger Pass

What would a winter in Yosemite be without skiing at Badger Pass Ski Area? The two have remained united when it comes to exploring the beauty the cold and snow offers visitors. We opened our doors at Badger Pass Ski Area to learners and locals in the winter of 1935. Badger Pass has everything for a perfect winter day: transportation, accessible runs, affordable lift tickets, and easy to rent equipment and lesson signups.

When the weekend rolls around, why don’t you spend a day at Badger Pass Ski Area? We also won’t tell anyone if you decide to play hooky and spend a day on the slopes.

Before Arriving

Wake up well rested and ready to have an enjoyable day in the snow. Head over to the Yosemite Valley Lodge for a breakfast burrito from Basecamp Eatery, before the last shuttle bus picks you up at the Lodge entrance at 8:30 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. The scenic bus route takes about 40 minutes before arriving at Badger Pass. Check out our previous blog post here for more information regarding specific shuttle pick up times.

Gear and Preparations

No equipment? No problem! The rentals are on the first floor of the day lodge. Employees will help find a pair of skis or a snowboard best suited for you and boots to fit accordingly. If you bought your lift ticket ahead of time, you can pick it up at the front desk. This is a great time to get your equipment adjusted if you are not completely comfortable; making sure your helmet is buckled, jacket zipped, boots are tight, or modify anything bothering you. Now you are ready to head out to the slopes!

Beginner Friendly

For brand new skiers or snowboarders, Badger Pass offers Turtle, our tug lift. This lift helps, if you are a beginner, to understand what it feels like to be attached to something gliding across the snow. The Turtle area has practice cones to develop basic skills. Afterwards, you can learn how to ride a traditional chairlift. The Bruin chairlift helps gain experience with downhill speed.

Bruin is designed for our newest ski and snowboard students. The lift moves at slower speed, so you can take the time you need to learn how to get on and off the lift. Once warmed up, channel your inner John Muir and venture into the unknown... the land of harder runs. If you’re looking for a bit more of a challenge as a Beginner or Intermediate athlete, try out your newly learned skills on runs such as Eagle or Rabbit.

Our Favorite Runs

Experienced skiers enjoy riding the Eagle chairlift. Looking for a slightly longer run to take full advantage of Yosemite’s surrounding beauty? Perhaps try the following route: take the Eagle chairlift up to the top, then make a left-hand turn like you are about to head down the main run. When you see signage for Eagle, Rabbit, and Beaver, split off, and continue to the farthest side of the hill, down Beaver. This route has some slow sections perfect for admiring the snowcapped trees. The well-groomed and quiet terrain feels like you have the whole run to yourself.

Getting off the lift, on the right-hand side, explore cutting through the forest; options here to take black Wildcat down to the bottom, or blue Chipmunk. Ending on Chipmunk places you in an advantageous position to ride the Badger lift.

The Badger lift has access to Grey Owl, Badger, and connects back down to the beginner hill, Bruin. The views where Badger meets the top portion of Bruin cannot be beaten! These runs are shorter, but great if you like to catch speed. Just make sure to be aware of your surroundings when you shred near other learners and share the space!

Something for Everyone

If downhill sports don’t entice you, try out cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Trail recommendations, guided snowshoe tours, maps, and gear are all available at the Nordic Center.

For families we have a small tubing area, where the little ones can play and slide, while older siblings take ski or snowboard lessons.

Even if you are not participating in the sports at Badger Pass, you still have access to the day lodge and its added ambiance. We have food options available and a Sport Shop for some light shopping and souvenirs. Keep warm with hot cocoa available for purchase inside and spend the day watching people come down the mountain. The lodge is a perfect location to cheer on your loved ones as they successfully crush their first blue or black run!

No matter what activity you choose, there is always fun to be had in the snow! Yosemite in the winter is a magical place like no other, leaving your family awestruck by the beauty. 

Helpful Tips for Your Next Visit to Badger Pass

Good news Badger Pass family! We already thought the 2022/23 season has been a momentous year for snowfall, and groundhog Punxsutawney Phil predicted another 6 weeks of winter. Now, there is no excuse not to spend a day on the slopes at Badger Pass!

Badger Pass is a fan favorite because of our affordable rates, great hills, low wait time, and overall dedication to ensuring you have a fun time! We compiled all our best tips to make your Badger Pass experience as easy as possible. By the time summer rolls around you will still be thinking fondly of all the winter days up on the hill, enough to keep the stoke alive until next season.

Take the Complimentary Shuttle

Take a break; our shuttle is not only convenient, but it’s also free! Our shuttle runs 7 days a week. Visitors pick up the shuttle in Yosemite Valley, at one of our lodges. The first stop picks up from Curry Village registration at 8:05 a.m., followed by Yosemite Transportation at 8:10 (located across from the Village Store, there is a small gazebo with a bench underneath), and the last stop is the Yosemite Valley Lodge, departing at 8:30 a.m. For those who like to sleep in, the second run starts service at Curry Village registration at 10:35 a.m., Yosemite Transportation pickup at 10:40, and the last bus departs from the Yosemite Valley Lodge at 11 a.m. The return shuttle picks you up from the day lodge at Badger Pass, at 2 and 4:30 p.m. For a full breakdown of the shuttle times, head here. On the way back to your accommodations, relax your legs and enjoy the beautiful views as you pass through Tunnel View on the descent back into Yosemite Valley.

Parking

If you choose to bypass the shuttle and drive your own vehicle to Badger Pass, our parking is close to the Lodge and free. There is plenty of space for you to park. The parking lot is located on a slight hill. The lot often has icy patches, heed with caution and bring appropriate footwear possible.

Stay Safe and Up to Date

Before heading into Yosemite National Park, we highly recommended checking the current weather and road conditions. Also, note federal law requires carrying chains in your vehicle during the winter season. Being located at elevation, weather and conditions can and do change frequently. To find out the latest conditions, call the road condition number at 209-372-0200 then press 1, and 1 again; this is the best way to stay updated with the most current information. When in doubt driving on mountain roads, go slow and turn out safely into designated turn out areas.

Food + Shopping

There is food available for purchase inside the Badger Pass Lodge. The menu is very family oriented and has easy go-to items such as burgers and fries and even breakfast options for those first on the hill types. Additionally, there are vegetarian options, hot beverages, and beer sold here. Forgot your beanie, goggles, or gloves at home? The Sport Shop is the spot to pick up last minute (or additional) gear you need to comfortably enjoy the snow or grab a Yosemite souvenir to remember your trip fondly with.

Book Your Tickets in Advance

All-day adult lift tickets start at $62 and children's tickets at $35. If skiing isn’t your thing but you still want to try out the winter sports located at Badger Pass, we have snowshoeing and tubing! The Nordic Center, located at Badger Pass, has guided snowshoeing tours. Our tubing is best a great activity for the little ones. There are two tubing sessions, from 11 am to 1 p.m., followed by a second one which starts at 2 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m.

Lessons

Those interested in ski or snowboard lessons can take a class from our expert instructors. We offer both private and group lessons. Lessons are first-come, first-served, so be sure to arrive early and get signed up for the day! All tickets, including season passes are available online here.

What About Sledding?

During the early stages of winter sports in Yosemite, there was toboggan sledding located at Camp Curry. Today, there is no sledding permitted at Badger Pass (or at Camp Curry), so we can prioritize safety for everyone on the mountain and trails. Our designated areas are uniquely curated for each individual snow activity. This makes sure there is space for everyone to enjoy Bager Pass! Did you know that most of the plastic we consume ends up in landfills, or worse, in our oceans, environment and even inside of us all the while taking up to 500 years to break down? Think about all the single-use plastic items you used today, last week and last month. It adds up quickly. Plastic Free July provides the resources and space for us to reflect on our daily lives and how those habits affect our environment, community, and health.

In a place as beautiful and fragile as Yosemite National Park, it’s imperative we do whatever is necessary to reduce and remove single-use plastic products we consume. That is why we are asking our community of employees who live and work in the park and guests for the month of July to consider a plastic-free July. Whether it’s eliminating all single-use plastics from your life or starting with just one thing, every person and every decision matters.

Eliminating single-use plastics from everyday life can be daunting. But you don’t have to start by eliminating every piece of single-use plastic from your life. You can start small with one or two things, then more and more until you have reduced your plastic consumption significantly or even entirely. Grab a reusable water bottle, reach for the non-plastic water bottle always choose the aluminum or paper container option for your drinks, don’t grab that straw, say no to plastic zip-top bags and pick a reusable option. Whatever it is, you can take small steps to make a big difference.

As a part of our commitment to removing single-use plastics long-term, this July we are launching a program at the Yosemite Valley Lodge Gift and Grocery Store to remove single-use plastic containers for water bottles in favor of aluminum cans.

This is just the beginning. Plastic Free July is an invitation to examine single-use plastics and perhaps eliminate even just one for good. After all, we don’t need 100 people doing it perfectly, we need millions doing it imperfectly.

The holidays are always a wonderful time of the year, but this year, you may wish to book a getaway this December to see Yosemite’s holiday décor at Curry Village, Yosemite Valley Lodge and The Ahwahnee ahead of the holiday. Book a stay at one of these properties and make this holiday season one to remember, filled with creative holiday decorations, outdoor adventures, and endless holiday cheer. Make sure to visit the Village Store and Degnan’s Kitchen in Yosemite Village as they are also decorated with festive decor!

Our holiday décor designer Carla has been decorating stores and hotel lobbies in Yosemite for more than 20 years. Each year she picks a specific theme for each location. For example, Base Camp Eatery has a rock climbing themed tree; Degnan’s Kitchen has a Santa themed tree and there is a fun community tree at the Village Store made with handcrafted skunk ornaments from recycled materials by local children.

There are four small windows along the red carpet entrance to The Ahwahnee each decorated with a holiday gingerbread cookie scene. Carla handcrafted many of the elements including a vintage style stove.

Yosemite's Environmental Living & Learning Community (ELLC) is a group of Yosemite Hospitality employees finding ways to make Yosemite more sustainable. They live in a designated area of housing, and work on projects inside employee housing and throughout Yosemite Valley. Through this program they help support Yosemite Hospitality's sustainability programs and the park’s Zero Landfill Initiative.

Some projects the ELLC has worked on include:

• Building and maintaining a community herb garden.
• Creating community compost bins to reduce food waste.
• Constructing a clothesline for employees to save electricity.
• Organized weekly communal meals with environmentally friendly diets.
• Monitoring our electricity and water usage.
• Hosting the parks first cigarette recycling program for employee housing.

Additionally, the ELLC hosts guests speakers and workshops that are open to the community. Some examples of past workshops include:

• "Mental Health While Living in a National Park", with legendary rock climber Ron Kauk.
• "Creating Facelift", with Yosemite Climbing Association president Ken Yager.
• "Useful Plants in Yosemite", with park naturalists and interpreters.
• "The Truth About Garbage", with the Leave No Trace organization.
• "Quick and Easy Vegan Cooking", with Yosemite locals.
• "Sustainable Farming", with Raw Roots owner Andrew Glikin.
• Organized trash clean-ups in and around Yosemite.

The ELLC is seasonal, operating from June 1st - September 1st. Typical housing for ELLC members includes platform tents with two or three roommates and communal kitchens and washrooms. Outside of community projects, the ELLC promotes awareness and helps support other sustainability initiatives around Yosemite. The ELLC furthers Yosemite Hospitality’s goals by finding ways to reduce electricity consumption, recycle waste, and conserve water.

Yosemite Mountaineering School

Yosemite National Park is well known as a mecca for rock climbers. People travel to Yosemite from around the world to pursue their dreams of conquering the park’s impressive granite peaks.

“As I hammered in the last bolt and staggered over the rim, it was not at all clear to me who was the conqueror and who was the conquered, said Warren Harding, leader of the first team to climb El Capitan in 1958. “I do recall that El Cap seemed to be in much better condition than I was.”

In addition to the vertical challenge of rock climbing, the spring waterfalls and wildflowers, high alpine meadows in the heat of summer and trails through the astonishing diversity of Sierra Nevada life zones make Yosemite an iconic destination for hiking and backpacking. The Yosemite Mountaineering School & Guide Service (YMS), operated by Yosemite Hospitality, provides skilled instructors and experience local guides with whom visitors can test their endurance and achieve their goals, whether the top of El Capitan or the wilderness of Yosemite's High Country. 

50th Anniversary

This year marks the 50^th Anniversary of YMS and the team is offering numerous adventures for park visitors to connect with Yosemite’s natural wonders. You can choose from world-class rock climbing and instruction, private guided climbs, custom and group hikes, guided backpacking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing throughout Yosemite’s extensive wilderness. The YMS is open year-round with exciting adventures for different seasons including guided snowshoe hikes to Dewey Point, backpacking to the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River, guided hikes on the Panorama Trail and the “Welcome to the Rock” beginner rock climbing class at Swan Slab. Leave No Trace principles and wilderness ethics continue to be a focus for students and guides. Environmental education is an essential part of their program.

How did the YMS get started? A great mountaineer, Wayne Merry was one of the first rock climbers to reach the summit of El Capitan in November 1958, and would go on to start the Yosemite Mountaineering School & Guide Service. In addition to founding the YMS, Merry was instrumental in working with the National Park Service to create the Yosemite Search and Rescue (YOSAR), which completes hundreds of rescues per year.

YMS has guided some famous people over the past five decades including teaching cross-country skiing to Charlton Heston and his entire family. Wayne Merry fondly recalls climbing Royal Arches with Apollo 8 Astronaut Bill Anders and Tenzing Norway, first successful climb of Mountain Everest in 1953, in the 1970s. That tradition continues with President Obama and his family visiting (and climbing!) with us in 2016.

“Climbing is the ultimate escapism,” says Wayne Merry. “When you are on any difficult wall, it’s total concentration. When you can stop on the ledge and bring up your partner, you have the time to appreciate where you are—and being high on the face of El Capitan is like no place on earth. To make the first ascent on the world’s most famous rock climb was an incredible experience.”

Remodeled Guest Rooms

A Fresh Change of Scenery  

Now is the perfect time to plan your Yosemite National Park getaway with a stay at The Majestic Yosemite Hotel. The Majestic Yosemite Hotel is currently upgrading guest rooms in the main building to enhance the guest experience at this National Historic Landmark. This is an eco-friendly remodel with all former carpet and mattresses being recycled and all furniture is being re-purposed. The stunning guest room transformation will be complete spring 2018. 

Elegant Design 

The design of the remodeled guest room was inspired by Donald and Mary Tresidder, who lived here on the property and were among the park’s first concessioners. The Tresidder’s private residence encompassed the hotel’s entire sixth floor, a suite of rooms furnished and decorated with an eclectic mix of styles reflecting both English and California Mission influences.

Donald and Mary’s private quarters were interpreted by designers Richard Kollath and Edward McCann, and they created a design inspired by the Tresidders featuring plush wool carpeting, nail head trimmed upholstery, copper tabletops, and forged light fixtures - all custom made by American companies. 

Yosemite-Inspired Artwork

A towering figure in the history of Yosemite, writer and naturalist John Muir devoted his life to protecting this extraordinary place, and was instrumental in establishing Yosemite as a National Park. The art on the walls are reproductions of botanical samples Muir collected and pressed in his notebooks in the 1870s during his walks in Yosemite.
