Landmarks of Legacy

A Centennial Approaches: The Ahwahnee Turns 100

In the 1920s, the National Park Service embarked on a bold vision: to build a grand hotel in Yosemite National Park that would attract the country’s most affluent travelers and demonstrate that wilderness and luxury could coexist. The result was The Ahwahnee Hotel, an architectural masterpiece that, nearly a century later, remains the most extraordinary hotel in the National Park System.

A designated National Historic Landmark, The Ahwahnee is uniquely positioned to showcase three of the most recognizable natural features in the American West, offering direct views of Half Dome, Glacier Point, and Yosemite Falls from its windows and grounds. Year-round guided tours invite guests and visitors alike to immerse themselves in nearly a century of history, all without leaving the valley floor. As America approaches its 250th anniversary, Aramark Destinations invites you to experience this iconic landmark as it nears its own centennial

A Marvel of American Ingenuity

Commissioned in the 1920s to attract guests with refined tastes to Yosemite, The Ahwahnee Hotel was built on a scale few hotels in the world could match. Five thousand tons of granite were quarried and shaped to anchor the building to the valley floor. A thousand tons of structural steel were concealed behind timber and stone to create a sense of permanence, while thirty thousand feet of lumber were milled and finished to form the soaring interiors that define the guest experience.

Our Promise to These Places, and to You

Landmarks of Legacy connects our destinations through three shared commitments.

Stewardship

Caring for What Endures: As a National Historic Landmark, The Ahwahnee carries a responsibility to preserve its original materials, craftsmanship, and character for future generations. That stewardship extends beyond the building itself to Yosemite Valley, where Aramark serves as the National Park Service’s primary concessioner partner in one of America’s most visited and ecologically significant landscapes. Through initiatives focused on waste reduction, water conservation, and energy management across lodging and dining operations, Aramark helps protect the park’s resources. A century-old landmark in an ancient valley demands exceptional care—and The Ahwahnee has received it.

Stories that Shape Our Destinations

Every Landmark Has a Voice: The Ahwahnee was built on a bold idea: that a world-class hotel could inspire more people to visit—and support—America’s national parks. Its design blends Art Deco, Native American, Arts and Crafts, and Middle Eastern influences into a landmark unlike any other. Yet its greatest story lies beyond its walls. Nestled in Yosemite Valley, the ancestral homeland of the Southern Sierra Miwuk people and a landscape shaped over millions of years, The Ahwahnee has spent a century connecting guests to one of America’s most treasured places.

Experiences of Legacy

Not Spectators. Participants. Stepping into The Ahwahnee’s Great Lounge—with its soaring stone fireplaces, timber beams, and views of Yosemite Valley—is much the same experience guests enjoyed a century ago. Guided tours reveal the stories behind spaces like the Mural Room, Solarium, and Winter Club Room, while traditions such as the Bracebridge Dinner and Vintners’ Dinner continue in the rooms created for them. These are not reenactments but living traditions. As The Ahwahnee approaches its 100th anniversary, every guest becomes part of a story that began in the 1920s and continues today.
